INTRODUCTION:
Mental Health Counselors, Social Workers and others who work in the helping profession generally work in high-stress, demanding environments that influence their levels of wellness. Large caseloads and established benchmarks for successful treatment of complex cases serve as catalysts for burnout and impairments and pose an ongoing threat for professionals.  Thus, self-care is imperative. But is it an ethical issue? We have not traditionally identified ourselves with the concept of ethics as it relates to self-care.  We are expected to be professionally fit and available.  Therefore, professionals who fail to take care of themselves are less likely to be competent providers.  It can create an ethical problem because their ability to help clients is compromised. As a result, professionals are in violation of the very code of ethics they agreed to uphold. Come join us and learn more about what our ethical codes mandate regarding self care and impaired practices.

THIS MEETS THE 3 HOUR/6 HOUR ETHICS LICENSURE REQUIREMENT FOR SOCIAL WORKERS AND COUNSELORS.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES INCLUDE:
Purpose of ethical codes (ACA, ABEC,  NASW, NBCC, ASBSWE)

pertaining to Self-Care

Review of ethical codes (ACA, ABEC, NASW, NBCC, ASBSWE) pertaining to Self-Care and practicing while impaired

Understand the ethical implications for practice and self-care (Such as: Are supervisor's accountable for the self-care of the clinical staff they supervise?)
Ethical decision-making processes when faced with ethical dilemmas regarding self-care
